Swanlund Endowed Chair: Frederick E. Hoxie

Frederick E. Hoxie is Swanlund Chair and Professor of History, holds an appointment in the College of Law, and is an affiliated faculty member in the university’s American Indian Studies Program.  He received his Ph.D. from Brandeis University and has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Mellon Foundation.  Prior to his appointment at Illinois he taught at Antioch College and Northwestern University and served as Director, Vice President and Curator at the Newberry Library.  Professor Hoxie has worked as an expert witness for several tribes, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.  He has written three books and more than two dozen scholarly articles on federal Indian policy, the history of Native communities, and the teaching of American Indian history.
